Advanced Studio Art
Christian Ward and George E. Huffman

Studio art is a portfolio building class for Griffin Seniors. This year-long course focuses on both 2-D and 3-D skill building projects. George E. Huffman, a professional painter and printmaker, teaches the 2-D section. Our Art Director Christian Ward, an Industrial Designer, teaches the 3-D section. 2-D The purpose of this course is to expose students to a broad survey of 2-dimensional art techniques. Addressed are a very broad interpretation of drawing issues and media. Light and shade, line quality, rendering of form, composition, surface manipulation, and illusion of depth are drawing issues that can be addressed through a variety of means, which could include painting, printmaking, mixed media, etc. Abstract, observational, and inventive works may demonstrate drawing competence. The range of marks used to make drawings, the arrangement of those marks, and the materials used to make the marks are endless. There will be exploration into broader notions of 2-D design through any two-dimensional medium or process, including, but not limited to, graphic design, digital imaging, photography, collage, fabric design, illustration, painting, and printmaking. By the second semester, students are challenged to create images that denote (or connote) their interpretations, feelings and beliefs about selected concentrated concepts. These concepts can range from the mundane to the sublime, including interpretations of physical reality and/or invented reality. In order to achieve these conceptual goals, students are expected to develop their drawing and formal 2D design skills, as well as their technical proficiency in demonstrated techniques.
